A Dhaka court has granted a six-day remand for Faisal Rubel Ahmed, a close associate of Faisal Karim Masud alias Rahul, the prime accused in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, convener of Inqilab Mancha.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the remand order on Thursday following a petition filed by the investigating officer.
Sub-Inspector Md Rukunuzzaman of the prosecution confirmed the order.
Rubel was arrested on Wednesday night by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with assistance from the Detective Branch (DB) police, from the Ati Nayabazar area of South Keraniganj.
He was produced before the court on Thursday, where the investigating officer—CID Dhaka Metro (East) Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdul Qadir Bhuiyan—sought a 10-day remand.
According to the remand petition, the accused, along with his associates, supporters, and financiers—both direct and indirect—and acting on the advice and instructions of unidentified individuals, carried out the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi in a premeditated manner. The stated motive was to obstruct the upcoming national parliamentary election, create misunderstandings among political parties intending to participate, and weaken candidates’ morale. After the incident, the accused went into hiding.
The petition further stated that the accused helped named and other suspects go into hiding after the incident and identified Rubel Ahmed as a close associate of Faisal Karim Masud. It added that his identity and address are being verified and sought a 10-day remand for thorough interrogation to uncover key facts of the case.
State Prosecutor Jamal Uddin Margin argued in favor of the remand. No defense lawyer appeared on behalf of Rubel.
After hearing the arguments, the court granted a six-day remand.
