Its farmland is shrinking every year. Bangladesh is nearly self sufficient in food production. Rice is the staple food and Bangladesh produces all the rice required every year.

But growing population is threatening to change the scenario. More and more houses are being built on farmland every year. It may reduce food production in near future.

Two storied buildings are rare in rural areas, which is a misuse of land. The people of rural areas are too poor to build two storied houses.

Khondokar Shawkat Hossain, secretary of housing and public works ministry has urged diploma engineers to find a solution. He says, engineers need to plan for cluster housing to save the limited farmland of the country. He was speaking at a seminar yesterday.
