Compensation amount has not been utilized, road accident victims have not yet received payment

The Road Transport Act 2018 provides for the creation of a fund to provide financial assistance to the heirs of those killed and injured in road accidents. The fund is managed by a board of trustees. The rules under this law came into force on 27 December 2022. These rules outline the procedure for constitution of the Board of Trustees, collection of funds, amount of compensation and its distribution.

According to the rules, the family of the deceased victim is entitled to receive Tk 500,000 as compensation. In cases of damage to vital organs, the victim is entitled to Tk 300,000. If there is no possibility of an injured person returning to normal life even after treatment, financial assistance of Tk 300,000 is provided. If recovery is possible, the amount is Tk 100,000.

Applications from affected individuals have been accepted since the rules came into force. Compensation payments began on 19 October 2023, when checks were handed over to 162 recipients.

In April 2024, six months after compensation payments began, Boney Amin of Bagerhat applied for compensation. His brother, MD Golam Rasool, died in a road accident on 19 April the same year. Ghulam Rasool worked as a sweeper in a madrassa. Two days after his death his wife gave birth to a son.
