Confusion over meeting IMF’s reserve target

Ahsan H Mansoor, former IMF official and executive director of the Policy Research Institute (PRI), said, “I am assuming that some dollars will come in the next two months. But the government must stop selling dollars altogether to keep reserves within the IMF’s June target.

He said that the deficit is not that small and failure to meet the IMF target will not make Bangladesh happy.

The renowned economist also said that if Bangladesh fails to meet the reserve target, it will be considered as an underperformer on the global stage.

On power tariff, he said the government should assess the cost of power and if necessary, increase it now as national elections would come up later.

He also advocated a long-term framework besides a clear announcement regarding increase in the revenue-GDP ratio in the next budget.
