Congress leaders say judiciary is under pressure

Some Congress leaders, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, cited the change of judge in the case.

Hours after the verdict, activist and Supreme Court lawyer Vineet Jindal filed a complaint with the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, seeking Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the House after serving a two-year sentence.

A criminal defamation case was filed against Rahul Gandhi by Surat West BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.

It pertains to Rahul Gandhi’s alleged remark at a Lok Sabha election rally in Kolar, Karnataka in April, 2019 that “how can all thieves be surnamed Modi”.

Last week, the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma concluded after hearing final arguments from both the sides and fixed March 23 for pronouncing its verdict in the four-year-old defamation case.

Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi was present inside the court room along with Congress leaders.

Purnesh Modi, who is a former Gujarat minister, welcomed the court’s decision.

He said, ‘I welcome the court’s decision.

Purnesh Modi’s lawyer Ketan Reshamwala said that Rahul Gandhi has been convicted under sections 499 and 500 of the IPC.
