The westBengalgovernment had taken initiatives to secure part of the different rivers for the better production of Hilsha fishes.
Fishing is prohibited in the respective restricted areas. Hilsha fishes are of saline water but during their reproduction period they come to the rivers. Their reproduction period is from October to December. Fishing is prohibited during this period.
Experts of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute have conducted a survey in this regard. Different sections of the rivers ofCalcutta, Murshidabad and Nodia districts have been selected.
Concerned personnel hoped that this initiative will enhance the productivity of Hilsha fishes.
