The agency said the manufacturer and marketer have not given guarantees to the WHO on the safety and quality of the product.
The WHO lists the “toxic effects” of the syrup as “abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, inability to urinate, headache, altered mental status and acute kidney injury” that can lead to death.
According to a Bloomberg report, the health ministry in India announced that the products are now being seized from the market, after the drug failed in separate tests conducted in Iraq.
