Controversial Chinese research ship allowed to resupply Maldives Call: No research activities allowed

The Chinese ship, Shi Yan 6, was allowed access to the port in Colombo in October, and Sri Lankan authorities later granted it 48 hours to conduct marine research after diplomatic pressure from Beijing.

Another Chinese ship, Yuan Wang 5, which specializes in spacecraft tracking and which New Delhi has described as a spy ship, visited Sri Lanka in 2022.

In 2014, a pair of Chinese submarines stopped in Sri Lanka, prompting India to protest. Since then, Sri Lanka has not allowed Chinese submarines to enter its ports.
