Complaints of corruption are being filed every day, yet no one can be accepted for investigation. No new cases are being filed, and charge sheets cannot be filed in courts. Key activities such as freezing assets, imposing travel bans and arresting suspects have also effectively stopped.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has been in a dormant state for more than three and a half months following the resignation of its Chairman and two Commissioners.
Several officials of the country’s premier anti-corruption agency said almost all major activities have been suspended in the absence of the commission. Although five to six new corruption complaints are submitted every day, they cannot be accepted for investigation because the commission’s approval is required.
Similarly, the Commission’s approval is also required for registering cases, approving investigation reports, submitting charge sheets in courts and applying for asset confiscation or travel ban. However, since all three members of the Commission resigned simultaneously on March 3, none of these decisions can be taken.
