Rail crossings are one of the most accident-prone areas in Bangladesh. At many places, proper signaling systems are absent, leaving security dependent on gatemen. Without introducing automated, technology-driven systems, risks cannot be mitigated. Also, regular training, adequate manpower and modern security mechanisms are essential.
Another important issue is the need for an independent investigation system. Instead of relying on internal railway authorities, a separate, autonomous body should investigate accidents. This will help ensure proper accountability. This is an important test for the present government; Will it continue the old practice of blaming lower-level employees, or will it pursue lasting, structural reforms?
During festivals like Eid, when people go home in joy, such tragedies turn that joy into sorrow in an instant. To move forward from this reality, a culture of accountability will have to be established. Extensive reforms are required in technology, management and human resources.
