Speaking at the seminar, Professor MD Golam Sarwar, head of the department of entomology at NIPSOM, said, “Mosquito and larval repellants have lost their effectiveness.” What is the point of spraying insecticide which does not kill mosquitoes?
A 10-point recommendation was made in the seminar, which included increasing awareness for dengue prevention, increasing public participation for dengue control, setting strategic priorities to deal with the situation, increasing capacity in health management, taking creative initiatives for patient management in hospitals , involves implementing coordinated management. Mosquito control, distribution of bed nets, regular mosquito surveillance, whole government involvement in dengue control, intensive supervision and regular evaluation of work.
But the question is, who will bell the cat? How can the spread of dengue be prevented? Dengue variants have evolved. If the old insecticides do not work, then new insecticides have to be used. The sources of dengue have to be completely eliminated. If suggestive messages fail to make people aware, punitive action will have to be taken.
