DNC officials said that in the early 1980s, Phensedyl was the dominant drug in the country. This drug entered the country from India through the border areas. The scenario changed in the last decade. Yaba instead of Phensedyl spread widely in the country and now the snow is coming.
Recently, unconventional drugs have also been seized in the country. These include phenethylamine which looks like cocaine, LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), DMT (dimethyltryptamine) and magic mushrooms (psilocybin mushrooms), khat, a psychotropic leaf that grows in Ethiopia, kush (a species of marijuana tree), Adderall, Ecstasy or Molly, cannabis and fentanyl.
Except Khat, Kush and Bhang, all these are synthetic drugs. Yaba’s main ingredient is amphetamine, which is also a major ingredient in Adderall, Ecstasy, and Molly. The main component of fentanyl is opium. These narcotics have entered the country in different ways in the last three years. Drug consignments sometimes arrive through courier services; Sometimes air travelers bring it.
Narcotic traffickers primarily aim to ‘capture the market’ in Dhaka. Khandkar Mohid Uddin, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told Prothom Alo that drug dealers usually try to target Dhaka because of the large number of people living here. But the police remain vigilant to prevent the entry of ice and other narcotics into Dhaka.
