Justice Minister Peter Hammelgaard told a news conference: “The government will propose a law that will prevent the improper handling of objects of religious importance that are essential to a religious community.”

“Thus this proposal, for example, would make it punishable to publicly burn the Quran, Bible or Torah,” he added.

The government rejected protests from some Danish opposition parties, which said that banning Quran burning would infringe on freedom of expression.

Hammelgaard said, “I fundamentally believe that there are more civilized ways to express your views than to burn things.”
