A war of words between Bangladesh’s two main political camps over a BNP rally in Dhaka on December 10 turned violent, in which a supporter of the opposition party was killed in a clash with the police.
The BNP has called for district-level protests on Thursday after several central leaders and hundreds of workers were detained following violence that began on Wednesday afternoon when police gathered outside the party office in Naya Paltan in preparation for the rally. Tried to disperse supporters.
The venue for the event has not yet been confirmed, police said, adding that the BNP planned a violent blockade rather than a rally as law enforcers placed crude bombs, rice, water, pulses and firewood in and outside the party office. Claimed to have recovered the wood. Struggle
Ten prison vans packed with opposition activists left the party office in the evening and sporadic shots of tear gas shells and shotguns could still be heard in the area.
At least 20 people were injured during the clashes at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. One of them, Mohammad Mokbul, a 32-year-old BNP supporter and shoe and clothing artisan, died. Two others were admitted with bullet pellets in their bodies, while the rest were released after first aid.
General secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir staged a sit-in outside the party office after being stopped by law enforcers from entering the headquarters from where police claimed to have recovered crude bombs.
