Defeated candidates of the ruling Awami League also alleged ‘vote rigging’

Sanjida Khanam was the Awami League candidate in Dhaka-4 constituency.

They alleged irregularities at 18 polling stations and lodged separate complaints with the Returning Officer on January 7 and the Chief Election Commissioner the next day. He filed a writ in the High Court on Tuesday. Independent candidate Mohammad Awalad Hussain has won this seat. He is a former Assistant Private Secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In Madaripur-3, independent candidate Tehmina Begum defeated Awami League candidate Abdus Shobhan Golap by about 35,000 votes.

Tehmina is the president of Kalkini Upazila Awami League.

Abdus Shobhan held a press conference at Madaripur Press Club two days after the election and alleged that he had lost due to micro rigging and conspiracies. He alleged that his rivals took control of 12 out of 16 polling stations in Kalkini Paurashava and rigged the elections.

Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu was elected Member of Parliament five times from Barguna-1 constituency. This time too he was the Awami League candidate. However, he was defeated by an independent candidate.

Dhirendra Debnath Barguna stood third among the four Awami League leaders who contested the elections there.

Dhirendra Debnath lodged a written complaint with the District Returning Officer on Tuesday regarding irregularities in the election results. He alleged large-scale irregularities and rigging during the counting of votes. He alleged that the results were declared after dismissing the strong objections raised by the agents of the candidates regarding the counting of votes.

From Manikganj-2 seat, Awami League candidate Momtaz Begum lost to independent candidate and district committee treasurer Dewan Zahid Ahmed, who contested with the truck symbol.

Addressing a meeting on Tuesday, Mumtaz alleged that she was defeated at many centers due to rigging. He alleged that even the votes of some dead and migrant voters were cast in favor of the trucks.
