Momen said Bangladesh remains a part of the New Development Bank (NDB) which is the only concrete outcome of BRICS in the last 15 years.
Responding to a question, he said, “There are many issues – political and regional, and there is also the issue of maintaining balance (to join BRICS).”
He said there was an attempt to create a geographical balance and there were more interested countries but they also did not get (BRICS) membership.
Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Egypt and Ethiopia were the six countries that were invited to join BRICS in the recently concluded summit.
The announcement came after two days of talks between Brazilian President Luiz in cío Lula da Silva, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the summit in Johannesburg. Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in the discussion virtually.
BRICS is a consensus-based organization whose decisions require the consent of all members.
