Recalling memories of his student days, the veteran politician said that when he studied in Dhaka College in 1963, people used to enjoy boat rides on the Buriganga river.
However, now the water of both Buriganga and Shitalakhya is so foul smelling that it is difficult to even go near them. He regretted that adequate and effective projects are not being carried out to make Buriganga free from pollution.
Mirza Fakhrul also said that merely raising public awareness would not solve Dhaka’s problems. He questioned how systematically those responsible for policy making and city administration were performing their duties.
He said while development projects worth billions of taka are being implemented in the city, it is necessary to carefully assess how much common citizens are actually benefiting from them.
