Dhaka WASA’s proposal: 5 different water prices based on consumer income

In the proposal submitted by WASA, the price of water has been fixed at Tk 18.75 per unit for lower middle class people, Tk 25 for middle class people, Tk 31.25 for upper middle class and Tk 37.50 for upper class.

In such a situation, upper class people will have to pay an additional amount of Tk 22.32 per unit of water as compared to last year. If WASA’s proposal is implemented, upper middle class people will have to pay additional cost of Tk 16.07, middle class will have to pay Tk 9.82 and lower middle class will have to pay about Tk 4 per unit additional cost of water.

About 83 percent of WASA’s consumers are middle class and lower middle class people. So if the proposal on area-wise water pricing is implemented, people under these two categories will have to bear the additional cost.

According to people associated with the study, WASA has taken into account the Building Code-2000 to classify people based on their financial status. According to that, people who live in flats of 2,500 SQF or larger size will fall in the upper class category, people who live in flats of 1,500-2,500 SQF will fall in the upper middle class category, people who live in 1,000- A flat of 1,500 sqft will fall in the middle class category and those who live in a flat below 1,000 sqft will fall in the lower class category.
