During the tenure of the current government, Bangladesh’s engagement with countries and alliances such as China, Russia, Türkiye and the European Union has become evident. There were early signs of Bangladesh moving forward positively with India after the new government took charge. However, there remains uneasiness in the relations between the two countries.

International relations analysts believe that Sergio Gore would like to understand the overall direction of Bangladesh’s future diplomacy in bilateral and international relations through this visit.

From America’s perspective, there may be special emphasis on three issues:

The first thing is that America’s uneasiness regarding China is not hidden from anyone. Thus, he will try to understand how Bangladesh’s relations with China will evolve in the short and long term.

Secondly, the effectiveness of the agreement on reciprocal trade or ART with Bangladesh is important. The agreement stipulates that Bangladesh cannot enter into free trade or preferential economic agreements with countries that are not completely market-based. If this happens, the US could cancel the agreement and restore the previous reciprocal tariff rates. Therefore, the visit holds economic, political and strategic importance when considering bilateral relations.
