Modi was the chief minister of the western state during the violence, which left over 2,000 dead, most of them Muslims.
Mayukh Biswas, general secretary of the SFI, the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said, “The undeclared emergency continues to be imposed…but they will not stop the voice of protest.”
At Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, hundreds of students watched the documentary on mobile phones and laptops on Tuesday after power was cut ahead of a scheduled screening on campus, student leader Aishe Ghosh said.
The university had threatened disciplinary action if the documentary was shown, saying it did not allow such shows which could disturb peace and harmony on campus.
