Study author Zilla Gullias, from the University of Sheffield’s School of Biosciences, said: “Eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day can significantly reduce the risk of developing health problems such as obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and Are.” and some types of cancer, and may help prevent related deaths and cut health care costs around the world.”
“Our new study highlights the role that growing fruits and vegetables on a home scale can play in increasing their consumption.”
The study’s findings suggest that home food production can boost fruit and vegetable consumption and play an important role in increasing household and national food self-sufficiency as well as reducing waste.
Households that had the ability to grow their own fruits and vegetables also saw far less waste, with an average of only 0.12 parts being thrown out per day. This is 95 per cent less than the fruit and vegetable waste of the average UK household.
