Dozens of Russian recruits were killed in a Ukrainian New Year’s Eve attack on their quarters in the Russian-controlled part of Ukraine’s Donetsk province, a source close to Russia’s appointed leadership said on Monday.
Footage posted online, which Reuters could not immediately verify, showed what was claimed to be a vocational college in the mining town of Makiivka reduced to a field of smoldering rubble.
“According to my information, less than 100 people have been killed so far,” said a Donetsk source on condition of anonymity.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said at least 400 Russians had been killed.
“What is being told is exaggerated. 58 wounded were brought in overnight, which is a lot for a normal day and not a lot if you believe the information about hundreds of dead. This Was a site for organized Russian recruits.”
