Dr Yunus and three others, as well as the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka, were made rule respondents on behalf of the state. The High Court also stayed the tribunal’s order until the rules were settled.
The bench issued the ruling and order following a criminal revision petition filed by the Department of Inspection of Factories and Establishments (DIFE) challenging the order of the Labor Appellate Tribunal.
Earlier on January 1, a Dhaka court had sentenced Dr Yunus and three others to six months in jail and imposed a fine of Taka 30,000 each in a case filed alleging labor law violations.
The maximum punishment in this case is six months’ imprisonment and a fine of Taka 30,000.
