Speaking to Prothom Alo from his hospital bed, Al Amin said the crew had cast their fishing nets when suddenly a powerful storm struck, causing the trawler to capsize and sink.

He said that trawler owner Imadul Sikdar, Harun Mia, Akash, Rakib, Shakeel, Nazmul, Bayazid and he himself were outside the cabin and managed to escape. However, their relatives Forkan Havildar, Forkan’s son Saim and Ebadul of Panpatti area were inside the cabin and could not get out.

According to Al Amin, Imadul, Najmul, Bayazid, Shakeel and Rakib became separated from the group in the rough seas. He, Harun and Akash managed to swim away, holding on to parts of the overturned trawler and a fishing buoy.

Two days later, the bodies of Forkan and Ebadul were found in the cabin of the overturned ship and washed up in the sea, he said.

He said he couldn’t help but cry after seeing them, but then he had to stop and focus on staying alive.
