There is a huge disparity between the current prices of various daily essential commodities in the global market and their prices in the local market of Bangladesh. Data prepared by the Commerce Ministry shows that some daily necessities in Bangladesh are being sold at much higher prices than in international markets.
The overall price difference is substantial, with the price of eggs in the local market being more than double that of the international market, even though the eggs are not imported into Bangladesh.
This came to light during the presentation given by the Commerce Ministry in the meeting held on Wednesday regarding price review of agricultural products. According to the Commerce Ministry, the prices of onion, ginger, green chilli and eggs have declined in the international market last month.
During this period, onion prices fell by 12 per cent per tonne, ginger prices fell by 17.80 per cent, green chilli prices fell by 33.33 per cent and egg prices fell by 4.90 per cent. Among consumer goods, only garlic prices remained unchanged.
