Eight workers suffered burn injuries following a boiler explosion at a steel mill Dhaka’s Shyampur area this morning.
The incident occurred around 9:00am at RRM Steel Mill, where workers were melting iron, according to the victims.
The injured were identified as Md Hira, 35; Manik Mia, 45; Khalilur Rahman, 56; Rajab Ali, 29; Matiur Rahman, 22; Ershad Mia, 45; Liton, 32; and Yusuf, 40.
They were rescued by co-workers and taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
According to the victims, the explosion occurred when substandard or incompatible metal was fed into the boiler along with quality iron, triggering a blast that caused molten metal to splash on them.
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident surgeon at the burn institute, said Manik suffered burns to 40 percent of his body and was admitted to the hospital, while Hira had 17 percent burns and was kept under observation.
The remaining six workers, who suffered between four and 11 percent burns, were given treatment and later released.
