Describing local government elections as a “big challenge” for the Election Commission, the CEC said elections should be conducted for 4,581 union councils, 495 upazila councils, 61 district councils, 13 municipal corporations and about 330 municipalities.
He said that the Commission will make every possible effort to conduct these elections peacefully.
Responding to a question about allowing loan defaulters to participate in national elections, the CEC said he did not wish to comment on the matter as it is currently under judicial consideration.
However, he commented that the Election Commission had not engaged in “cherry-picking” or selective decision-making in this regard.
