Election Commissioner MD Anisur Rahman told Prothom Alo yesterday that so far no one has made any demand regarding any reshuffle in the area administration. If any allegation is made against any officer, the Commission will take action.
The Election Commission said in its action plan that it will try to recruit ROs and AROs from among its own officers as far as possible. But in the end no officer of the Election Commission was recruited as RO. The Election Commission has recruited 56 Upazila Election Officers as AROs from among its own officers. District Election Officers and Upazila Election Officers have been recruited as ‘Assistant Officers’ to assist the RO. Sources said that there is dissatisfaction among the Election Commission officials regarding this recruitment.
The Awami League has been in power in the country for three consecutive terms since 2009. The government had made a major reshuffle in the police and administration last June and July in view of the next elections. In July, new commissioners were appointed in five divisions and new DCs were appointed in 30 districts. Around the same time, a total of 69 police officers of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and SP were reshuffled. At that time the opposition parties had alleged that the government was making changes in the regional administration as per its wish in view of the elections.
Asked about the allegation that the government wanted to bank elections on officials of its choice, Election Commissioner MD Alamgir said it was common for the opposition to level allegations against the government. But the allegations must be specific and based on evidence.
