Starting April 20, any legacy verified accounts on Twitter — which were verified as authentic under the company’s previous ownership — will need to pay for a subscription to Twitter Blue.
One of the reasons, Musk said, was that he didn’t want Twitter to promote “an anointed class of journalists” who determine what becomes news.
He said, “I expect it may be more a case of the public choosing the narrative as opposed to the media choosing the narrative.”
Twitter, he said, would “treat everyone equally”.
Musk assessed his time leading the social media network since taking over in October, saying it had been a “tense situation over the last several months”.
