Helsinki, Finland — England secured a decisive 3-1 victory against Finland in the Nations League on Sunday, while Austria showcased a stunning performance, overpowering Norway with a 5-1 win in Linz. The matches highlighted a resurgence for both teams, with England bouncing back from their recent defeat and Austria maintaining their strong form.
England’s Commanding Performance
England’s interim manager, Lee Carsley, made crucial adjustments following a disappointing loss to Greece at Wembley on Thursday. The changes were evident as England dominated possession and showcased their attacking prowess against a struggling Finnish side.

Jack Grealish opened the scoring in the 18th minute after a well-orchestrated 17-pass move. Angel Gomes, starting in central midfield, expertly threaded a ball through Finland’s defense, allowing Grealish to roll the ball past the Finnish goalkeeper skillfully.
Despite creating several opportunities, Finland failed to capitalize on their chances, with England’s goalkeeper Dean Henderson largely untroubled throughout the match. England continued to apply pressure, and in the 74th minute, Trent Alexander-Arnold, who played in a left-back position rather than his usual right, added a second goal. His stunning free-kick from 25 yards curled beautifully into the top corner, leaving the Finnish defense helpless.
As the match progressed, Declan Rice sealed the victory in the 84th minute, finishing a cross from substitute Ollie Watkins, ensuring England’s third win in four Group B2 matches. Finland, however, managed to score a consolation goal late in the game when Arttu Hoskonen headed home from a corner in the 87th minute, marking their first goal of the campaign.
“The team responded really well—in the best way,” Carsley stated post-match. “We played with a lot more control. We had massive possession, lots and lots of passes, and created chances. But we can do better.”
Despite the loss, Finland remains at the bottom of their group, having lost all their matches so far. Meanwhile, Greece solidified their lead in Group B2 by defeating the Republic of Ireland 2-0, maintaining a three-point advantage over England.
Austria Thrashes Norway
In the other match, Austria delivered a commanding performance against Norway, with Marko Arnautovic leading the charge. The Inter Milan forward scored twice, helping his team to a resounding 5-1 victory that left Norway’s Erling Haaland and his teammates stunned.
Arnautovic opened the scoring early, finding the net with a powerful strike from 20 yards that struck the crossbar and bounced in. Norway equalized shortly before halftime through Alexander Sorloth, who headed in a well-placed ball to bring the score to 1-1.
However, the second half belonged to Austria. Just four minutes into the half, Arnautovic restored their lead by converting a penalty kick after Christoph Baumgartner was fouled in the box.
The Austrian defense then rose to the occasion, as defenders Philipp Lienhart and Stefan Posch both scored towering headers within two minutes of each other, extending Austria’s lead to 4-1. Michael Gregoritsch capped off the dominant performance with another header, making it 5-1 and securing Austria’s position in Group B3.
Haaland, who plays for Manchester City, had a frustrating night as the Austrian defense successfully contained him, with his only significant chance coming in the fifth minute when his shot hit the post.
Despite the loss, Norway remains competitive in the group, tied on points with Austria and Slovenia, who secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Kazakhstan.
