New committee, fresh conflict in AL
Party leaders have confirmed that the last district Awami League council was held in 2022. Approximately eight months after the Council, a 75-member committee was established. This committee is headed by Chairman Shamim Haq, General Secretary Shah Mohammad Ishtiaq and Joint Secretary Amitav Bose.
On the other hand, the other faction is led by central leader Bipul Ghosh, district Awami League vice-president Farooq Hussain, women’s affairs secretary Ivy Masood, former president Subal Chandra Saha and a significant part of the city Awami League.
Sources say that the dispute started with the Zilla Parishad elections. District Awami League vice-president Farooq Hussain was the party’s candidate in the elections held on 17 October 2022. However, during the elections, he was defeated by Shahadat Hussain, who was supported by the Faridpur-4 (Bhanga-Sadarpur-Charbhadrasan) Member of Parliament.
