Anis Alamgir: I was made to sit in the DB office for several hours. Since there was no formal case against me, they were waiting for instructions. A fake case was presented at around 1 am in the night. I told the DB chief that the allegations against me appeared to be against the interim government. He had heard everything but was confused as to what to do. However, a fabricated case was later used to formally arrest me.
Then I was taken to a secluded room. It was dark and infested with mosquitoes; Apparently, mosquito control was never implemented there. There was an open drain next to it. The stench and mosquitoes made it impossible to sleep for almost 24 hours. The next evening, I was taken to court.
Later, they took me to another room in the DB office, while another detainee took my previous place. A five-day remand order was received. In total, I spent seven days there. After remand, I was sent to Keraniganj jail. My lawyer had requested a partition and the order was issued in his favor. But this was not paid attention to. I was put in the monitoring ward for new prisoners, what they call “imports.”
Next morning they roughly transferred me to Kashimpur jail. There, I was placed in a section that felt like another “import.” Hundreds of people lived in the same room. Later, I was taken to a building called Madhumati, where many Awami League leaders lived. It was effectively a prison within a prison, completely occupied by Awami League activists, most of whom held no official positions.
