Fire safety: unconnected drive, pull test

It is the responsibility of RAJUK to check whether the buildings are being built as per the city plan, how the buildings should be and how they actually are. Experts say that there are many shortcomings in the performance of their duties. However, RAJUK has campaigned after the Bailey Road fire. RAJUK officials are 'randomly' raiding various buildings and imposing fines.

RAJUK member (development control) Mohammad Abdul Ahad claims that their raid is part of routine action. He told Prothom Alo, it is not that RAJUK is operating the mobile court only after the Bailey Road fire. Such operations are conducted regularly. Two inter-agency teams have been formed in two corporations of Dhaka city to check whether the buildings have occupancy certificates, fire safety etc. The teams are working in a coordinated manner.

However, RAJUK sources say that after the Bailey Road fire, the organization's city development committee held a meeting on March 4, where it was decided to form 8 inter-agency teams headed by directors of 8 zonal offices of RAJUK. As per the decision, letters were sent to the municipal corporation, fire service and other concerned agencies for the names of their representatives.

The teams have not started the work yet. In fact, the work of forming teams has not even started yet. Dhaka North City Corporation Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mir Khairul Alam told Prothom Alo that RAJUK has called a meeting on March 14 (today, Thursday) regarding the integrated campaign. An action plan will be made in the meeting. He said, this is not just show off. From now on, the matter of trade license will also be closely monitored.

As part of RAJUK's plan for an integrated operation, a team from the organization also raided three buildings on Dhanmondi Road 9A yesterday, Wednesday. Two houses were fined.

For example, RAJUK built a house in Dhanmondi and found that the building had clearance for housing, but there were restaurants on the ground and first floors. There was a private school on the third floor. Executive Magistrate Munir Hussain Hauldar, who is leading the operation, said a deadline has been given to shift commercial establishments from residential buildings.
