First bone marrow transplantation centre of Bangladesh is officially inaugurated by the health minister today. This centre brings hope to many patients suffering from blood cancer and other diseases like this. In these diseases red blood cell formation decreases due to bone marrow problem.
So bone marrow transplantation becomes essential for these patients. But this is a costly procedure. It requires about one crore taka in Singapore and about forty lakh taka in India, which is not affordable to most of the patients. But the bone marrow transplantation centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital will do this by only five lakh taka.
Chief of the transplantation centre M A Khan had a lucrative offer to join bone marrow transplantation centre of King Faisal hospital at Saudi Arabia. But he decided to join Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He completed his training form Singapore on his own expense. Doctors, nurses, medical technologists were sent to Boston for training and practical experience. They are hopeful to ensure the same environment and quality of the USA.
