Mansoor Ahmed, president of the Chowkbazar mosque, was murdered in November at his home in Khaje Diwan Lane in Chowkbazar.
Those arrested have been identified as Mansoor’s grandson Shahadat Mubeen Alvi (20), his granddaughter Anika Tabassum (23), Anika’s friend Raju (22), and Raju’s younger brothers Rehaan and Saeed.
“Anika is a student of a private dental medical college, while her brother Alvi studies in a higher secondary school,” Biplab Bijoy Talukdar, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told a press conference at the DMP’s media center on Wednesday.
When the family refused to give them money for the trip, the two planned a robbery. Anika involves her friend Raju in the plan.
Biplab Bijoy Talukdar said they were arrested from Chowkbazar, Munshiganj and Chandpur after two days of operations on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Police said that after an investigation of the crime scene, a syringe was found, which justified the incident as murder.
“CCTV footage from several places around the house was collected and reviewed. After review, Anika and Alvi were identified and arrested from Chowkbazar. Based on the information provided by him, his friends Raju, Rehan, and Saeed, who were directly involved in the murder, were arrested from Munshiganj and Chandpur,” said Joint Commissioner of DMP.
“The group planned to steal the money while most of the family members were away at a wedding function on November 17. Later, they fled with the cash and gold ornaments,” the police officer said.
Police have recovered 62 thousand 500 rupees out of 92 thousand stolen from the house located in Bakshibazar.
