At the same time, many members of the Border Guard Police (BGP) under the control of Myanmar’s military government have fled to Bangladesh since Monday and have taken shelter here. Till Thursday evening, a total of 330 BGP members have taken shelter in Bangladesh. These include members of the Myanmar army and police and many government officials.
Fighting between rebel groups and Myanmar’s armed forces has been intensifying in the Rakhine region since the last week of January, according to sources in Yangon and Sittwe. This fight has increased a lot in the last few days.
In such a situation, the Indian Consulate in Rakhine evacuated all its diplomats from Sittwe on Thursday. At present only local officials of the Consulate and citizens of Myanmar are working there. Both India and Bangladesh have consulates-general in Rakhine.
