Former Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman recommended independent directors as bank chairmen for better governance

The event, chaired by Javed Akhtar, President of FICCI and Managing Director of Unilever Bangladesh, was attended by businessmen from various sectors and representatives of developing partner countries and agencies.

Atiur Rahman presented a paper titled ‘Bangladesh on the path to trillion dollar economy: Opportunities and challenges’ at the event.

He said that the depositors are the real owners of the company and not the people identified as the owners of the bank. Therefore, if independent directors are made the chairman of the bank, they will represent the real owners of the banks.

He said that Bangladesh has seen incredible development in the last 50 years. If GDP growth rate remains 5 percent then Bangladesh’s economy will be a trillion dollar economy.
