Apart from politicians, former bureaucrats, police officers, film and cricket stars are also rallying to get the nomination of the ruling Awami League in the next general elections.
The ruling party on Tuesday completed selling nomination forms to candidates who want to contest the next elections. A total of 3,362 nomination forms were sold for 300 seats. On an average 11 nomination forms were sold for each seat.
The candidates who bought the nomination forms include cricketers, businessmen, film actors and actresses, former bureaucrats, former police and army officers, doctors, diplomats, journalists, teachers and people from all backgrounds.
Now the Awami League Parliamentary Board will hold its first meeting on Thursday to finalize the ruling party’s candidates. AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will chair the meeting to be held at the Dhaka District Awami League office in Tejgaon in the city. Party sources said it may take three to four days to finalize AL candidates for 300 seats.
AL joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Naseem told Prothom Alo yesterday that people from any background may be interested in seeking the AL nomination because the party is so popular. The party will select candidates on the basis of popularity.
