In June, an overcrowded fishing trawler carrying 750 people evacuated from Libya sank near Greece.

According to Greek figures, about 100 of them were saved, but it is believed that about 600 people drowned.

In recent years thousands of migrants, mostly from Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan, have entered Greece through sea and land borders with Turkey.
Following a strict migration policy, Greece has increased patrols in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey with the help of Frontex, the European border monitoring agency.
