On February 12, within days of his admission to the university, a student became a victim of brutality by Chhatra League leader Sanjeeda Chowdhary, her follower Tabassum and a few others. They accused the new student of disobeying the leaders and tortured her for four and a half hours. They abused her in foul language, assaulted her, stripped her clothes and then videotaped her.

After the incident hit the media, the High Court on Thursday ordered setting up of a three-member inquiry committee to probe the matter. The court directed the authorities to ensure that the two accused students do not remain on the campus during the interrogation. Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Saidul Islam said the probe committee had not been constituted till Friday evening.

Uncontrollable after getting BCL post

Three of the eight halls of the Islamic University are for girls. One of the girls’ halls is the Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall. Sanjeeda Chowdhary, vice-president of the Islamic University Students’ League, a 2017-18 batch student of the Department of Statistics, lives in room 408 and Tabassum lives in Projapoti, the ‘Gono Room’ of the same hall. She is a student of the 2020-21 batch of the University’s Department of Finance and Banking.

According to some activists of the University Students League and some general students, the incomplete 24-member committee of the Chhatra League unit of the university was announced on the midnight of July 31 last year. Sanjeeda was given the post of Vice President. She is a follower of Faisal Siddiqui Arafat, president of the Islamic University Umbrella League, and that’s why she got this position in such a short span of time. After getting the position, he started establishing his control over everything in the hall.
