Kuma recently introduced classes for some women, saying more women are signing up than men who are already bound to serve in military training or be called up in the event of a Chinese attack.
Housewife Lai, who declined to give her last name, left her two children with her husband to attend.
“If there was a war, I would be at the rear. I attended this class to know what I could do to help others,” said the 40-year-old.
“I need to make sure I know what to do and prepare to ensure my kids’ safety.”
Accountant Yu Chiao-ling, 37, was using civics lessons to supplement a shooting course in May so she could come to the aid of her elderly parents.
“If there is a war, I will use a pistol to protect my home. I take care of my parents, who are in their 60s and 70s. It is my responsibility to protect them,” she said .
“We need to prepare well rather than avoid reality.”
