A 16-year-old girl died on Saturday after being bitten by a shark in a river in Western Australia’s state capital Perth after she jumped in to swim with a pod of dolphins.
Police said they were called to the scene of an attack at around 3:45pm on Saturday (0745 GMT) near a traffic bridge across the Swan River in Perth’s Fremantle port area.
The girl was pulled out of the water with serious injuries and died on the spot, police said in a statement.
Police believe the victim was with friends when the shark attacked and jumped off a jet ski to swim with a pod of dolphins in the river.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp reported that authorities were not sure what type of shark had attacked the girl.
