Google’s news-blocking test in Canada a ‘horrible mistake’, says PM Trudeau

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trudeau’s Liberal government last year introduced the “Online News Act,” which created rules for platforms such as Meta’s Facebook and Google to negotiate commercial deals and pay news publishers.

Facebook has also raised concerns about the law and warned that it could be forced to block news-sharing on its platform.

The legislation passed the House of Commons of Canada in December and is currently in the unelected upper chamber of parliament, which rarely blocks legislation that the lower house approves.

The rules are aimed at helping the Canadian news industry, which has called for regulation of tech firms citing mounting financial losses, while Facebook and Google continue to grab a greater market share of online advertising revenue.

Ottawa’s proposal is similar to a ground-breaking law passed by Australia in 2021, which has also drawn threats to curtail the services of Google and Facebook. The two eventually struck deals with Australian media companies after offering a series of amendments to the law.
