Present AL lead government planned to construct a new international airport, “Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujib International Airport” at Arial Beel area of Munshiganj which they were
compelled to abandon amid violent protest from the locals.
Many analysts have been saying, at present the country don’t need any new airport. The
present Dhaka international airport is sufficient; they also say this airport’s full
capacity is still not being used and it possible to expand its capacity. In this situation
construction of a new airport would be wastage of government fund. Political opponents also
alleged that actually the ruling party wants to see an airport in the name of its leader
Sheikh Mujib.
But the government has been insisting that the country will need a new airport within ten
years, present Shahjalal International Airport will not be able to handle demand of those
coming days. So we should proceed.
Now the government has selected four sites including that controversial Arial Beel site
Other three sites are are Bhanga of Faridpur, Baghiar Beel of Madaripur-Gopalganj, and
Sirajdikhan of Munshiganj district.
Yesterday the cabinet discussed on the project, prime minister asked concerned authorities
to submit detailed proposals. It is not clear yet that which site is most likely to be
selected, but Bhanga of Faridpur, and Baghiar Beel of Madaripur-Gopalganj are supported by
some leaders because they believe this will help them in the equation of vote. While Tangail
and Mymensingh districts were not considered because that airspace is used by air force.
