The Minister said that a Media Commission is necessary to ensure accountability, policy making and dispute resolution in the media sector.
“Of course, a media commission is necessary. The government is actually a party here. We have seen that the government can sometimes do wrong things. In a scenario where such possibilities exist, an institution like a media commission is necessary,” he said, adding that many modern countries already have such regulatory or oversight bodies.
He said that in the first phase, an advisory committee will be formed, which will include journalists, editors, media owners and experts.
Zaheer Uddin Swapan said that with the expansion of digital platforms and challenges faced by traditional media, an integrated framework has become necessary.
