The BNP has demanded that the government immediately roll back the hike in retail electricity prices, saying the ‘unjust’ decision is against the public interest.

General secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a statement on Friday, “The suffering of the people who are paying the price for the unbridled corruption perpetrated by the unelected government in the power sector has increased.”

“The government is taking money from people’s pockets as the cost of power generation has gone up due to corruption, wastage and mismanagement,” he said.

He also slammed the government’s plan to adjust power prices every month

The government on Thursday hiked the retail price of electricity by 5 per cent on the weighted average, effective from January.
