discharge from hospital
Officials said 18 bodies were found near the vast Dadia forest south of Avantas village. On Monday, another body, believed to be of a migrant, was found in a rural area some 40 km (25 miles) away.
The fire department said: “The possibility that these are people who entered the country illegally is being investigated.” It said that the search is on.
In Alexandroupolis, not far from Avantas, wildfires forced the evacuation of dozens of hospital patients, including newborns. A boat was converted into a makeshift hospital after 65 patients were evacuated from the University Hospital.
Nurse Nikos Gioctsidis said, “I’ve been working for 27 years, I’ve never seen anything like this.” “Stretchers everywhere, patients here, IV drips there… It was like a war, like a bomb going off.”
Fires also broke out near Athens on Tuesday, where blazes in the foothills of Mount Parnitha, on the outskirts of the city, burned homes and forced residents to flee.
Sotiris Masouris, a 50-year-old resident of Hasia, west of Athens, said, “The winds are very strong… It is very difficult to put out the fire. God help us.”
