Growing threat of illegal brick kilns: Environmental disaster looms

Despite various efforts of the government, the number of illegal brick kilns is increasing in the country, resulting in air pollution and environmental disaster.

Although the Environment Department runs a campaign to shut down illegal brick kilns, the kilns restart after a few days.

Half of the brick kilns do not even have environment clearance certificate and are working in violation of the law.

According to the report sent by the Environment Department to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate this week, a total of 1,500 brick kilns have increased in the last four years.

Although the Environment Department launched a campaign and closed about 1,000 brick kilns, 75 percent of them have restarted.

However, a non-government study shows that most of the brick kilns are running in disregard of the rules and thus causing air pollution. Dhaka remained in the top four in the air quality index between 7 am and 7 pm on Monday.
