2020
January: The couple announce their intention to step back from senior royal roles and become financially independent. They agree to give up their “Royal Highness” titles and move to California in March.
September: Streaming service Netflix, which makes the hit drama “The Crown” based on the life of the late Queen Elizabeth, announced the couple had signed a multi-year deal to produce content.
2021
February: Harry, who served in the armed forces for a decade, apologized over an article in the Mail on Sunday which claimed he had turned his back on the military.
A London High Court judge has ruled on the same letter that Meghan’s privacy was breached by publishing excerpts of the letter.
Buckingham Palace says the couple’s split as working members of the royal family is permanent and they will lose their royal patronage.
March: Buckingham Palace says it is “very concerned” about a report in The Times newspaper detailing allegations of bullying by former staff of Harry and Meghan and will launch an investigation.
The couple gave an interview to US chat show host Oprah Winfrey in which Meghan accused a royal of raising concerns about how dark their son Archie’s skin could be and said he had been pushed to the brink of suicide.
Harry says that he was let down by his father, and that he was “trapped” in the institution.
Queen Elizabeth responds by promising to address issues of racism, saying “some memories may differ”. William says: “We are not a racist family.”
April: Harry returns to Britain for the funeral of his grandfather Prince Philip, Elizabeth’s husband. Pregnant Meghan was advised not to travel.
May: Harry tells Winfrey in another interview how he had turned to alcohol and drugs to numb the grief he felt over the death of his mother when her car crashed as she was leaving press photographers had run away He says the fear of the same thing happening to Meghan was one of the main reasons he stepped down from royal duties.
June: Meghan gives birth to her second child, Lilibet Diana, named after Queen Elizabeth and Harry’s late mother.
2022
January: Harry begins legal action to challenge a government decision which denied him police protection in the UK. He later launched a defamation claim against the Mail on Sunday over an article saying he had tried to keep legal action secret.
June: Buckingham Palace says lessons have been learned following a review of allegations of bullying made against Meghan by royal staff, but refuses to give details.
Harry and Meghan return to Britain to celebrate Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne. He is greeted with cheers and a few jeers.
September: Harry and Meghan were in Britain when Queen Elizabeth passed away. They walk with William and Kate to meet mourners.
October: Harry, along with singer Elton John and others, sues the publisher of the Daily Mail newspaper over phone-tapping and other breaches of privacy.
Publisher Random House announced that Harry’s memoir “Spare” will be published in January.
