The world’s largest active volcano, Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, erupted on Sunday for the first time since 1984, ending its longest quiet period in recorded history.

The night sky above Hawaii’s biggest island was glowing a hellish red as hot lava spewed from the summit of a volcano on Sunday local time (0930 GMT Monday).

The US Geological Service (USGS) said the lava was contained within the summit and did not pose a threat to Hawaiians living below.

The service warned residents on Monday that volcanic gases and fine ash could be headed their way.
